India’s electric two-wheeler market is becoming increasingly competitive, and September 2026 delivered another strong month for the industry. TVS Motor Company retained the top position, while Bajaj Auto continued to close the gap with its Chetak electric scooter range.

According to Vahan registration data compiled by Autopunditz, India recorded 2,07,542 electric two-wheeler registrations in September 2026, an increase of 88.9% compared with September last year. Registrations were also up 12.3% from August.

The figures underline a significant shift in the market. Established manufacturers with experience in manufacturing, distribution and after-sales service are strengthening their positions against newer electric vehicle companies.

TVS Leads, but Bajaj Is Closing the Gap

TVS Motor Company registered 54,105 electric two-wheelers in September, compared with 48,482 for Bajaj Auto. TVS retained the lead, but the gap between the two manufacturers was fewer than 6,000 registrations.

Here is how the leading electric two-wheeler brands performed in September 2026.

TVS recorded approximately 126% year-on-year growth, while Bajaj grew by around 139%. Both brands registered more than twice their September 2025 volumes in the Autopunditz dataset.

Together, TVS and Bajaj accounted for approximately 49.5% of the total registrations recorded in that dataset. This concentration shows how strongly the established manufacturers are competing in India’s electric scooter market.

Why TVS iQube Continues to Matter

TVS has built a substantial presence in electric two-wheelers through its iQube range. Its appeal includes a familiar scooter format, a broad established dealer network and the backing of a major two-wheeler manufacturer.

For buyers moving from petrol scooters to electric models, practical considerations often matter as much as headline specifications. Access to servicing, availability of spare parts, charging arrangements and confidence in the manufacturer can influence a purchase.

TVS’s continued leadership in registrations suggests that its electric scooter portfolio is attracting substantial demand. However, monthly registration data alone does not explain exactly why individual customers choose one model over another.

Bajaj Chetak Is Putting Up a Strong Challenge

Bajaj Auto is also gaining ground with its Chetak electric scooter range. Its September registrations were close to TVS, and its year-on-year growth was higher in the dataset cited above.

Bajaj benefits from an established automotive business and a recognised scooter name. The Chetak range gives the company a way to compete in the electric market while drawing on its existing manufacturing and distribution experience.

The next challenge is to sustain this growth while maintaining product quality, service standards and customer satisfaction. If Bajaj continues to narrow the monthly registration gap, the competition with TVS could become even closer in the coming months.

Ather and VIDA Are Also Strengthening the Market

TVS and Bajaj are not the only established names benefiting from rising electric two-wheeler demand.

Ather Energy recorded 30,578 registrations in September in the Autopunditz dataset, placing it third. Hero MotoCorp’s VIDA brand also continued to grow, recording more than 24,000 registrations in a separate Vahan-based report.

These companies are competing through different product ranges and positioning. Ather has developed a technology-focused electric scooter portfolio, while VIDA is backed by Hero MotoCorp’s established two-wheeler business.

Ola Electric remained among the five leading manufacturers, although its September registrations were significantly below those of TVS, Bajaj, Ather and VIDA in the cited dataset.

The changing rankings show that India’s electric two-wheeler market is no longer defined by one or two brands. Buyers have an expanding choice of products across different prices, features and riding requirements.

What September’s Numbers Mean for Electric Scooter Buyers

The growth in registrations is encouraging for the wider EV industry, but buyers should not choose a scooter based only on sales rankings.

Before purchasing an electric scooter, compare its real-world range, battery warranty, charging time, service availability, comfort and on-road price. A scooter with a higher claimed range may not be the best option if it exceeds your budget or does not suit your daily travel.

Your charging arrangement also matters. Home charging can make everyday ownership easier, while riders who travel longer distances should check charging access and the battery range expected under their usual riding conditions.

What’s Next for TVS and Bajaj?

September’s figures suggest that the contest between TVS and Bajaj will remain one of the most important rivalries in India’s electric two-wheeler market. Both companies recorded strong year-on-year growth, while Ather and VIDA continued to strengthen their positions.

The next few months will reveal whether Bajaj can narrow the gap further or TVS can extend its lead. Future registration figures, product launches, pricing changes and customer demand will help determine how the rankings evolve.

For now, the clearest takeaway is that established two-wheeler manufacturers are playing a major role in India’s growing electric scooter market—and the competition is giving customers more options to consider.

Data note: Registration figures are based on Vahan data compiled by the cited industry sources. Totals may vary according to the date of data extraction, reporting filters and subsequent updates. Registrations are not necessarily identical to manufacturer dispatches or wholesale sales.
