India’s electric two-wheeler market continues to grow strongly in 2026, with electric scooter and motorcycle sales remaining significantly higher than last year.

According to the latest retail sales data, 1,82,936 electric two-wheelers were sold in India in August 2026. Although August sales were 11 percent lower than July’s record figure, they were still 67 percent higher than August 2025.

More importantly, electric two-wheeler sales during the first eight months of 2026 crossed 13.6 lakh units, already exceeding the 13.4 lakh units sold during the entire calendar year 2025.

TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Vida continue to account for a major share of India’s electric two-wheeler market, while several other manufacturers are expanding their product portfolios ahead of the festive season.

Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Cross 13.6 Lakh in 2026

The Indian electric two-wheeler segment reached a new milestone during the first eight months of 2026.

A total of more than 13.6 lakh electric two-wheelers were retailed between January and August 2026. This figure has already surpassed the full-year 2025 sales of around 13.4 lakh units.

August alone contributed 1,82,936 units. While this was lower than July’s record 2,04,266 units, the segment still recorded strong year-on-year growth.

The upcoming festive season could become another important period for EV manufacturers as companies compete through new models, updated variants, pricing offers and expanded dealership networks.

TVS Leads the Electric Two-Wheeler Market

TVS Motor continued to lead India’s electric two-wheeler market in August 2026.

The company sold 48,873 electric scooters in August, representing a 27 percent market share. Sales increased 91 percent compared with August 2025.

TVS had already sold 3,56,579 electric two-wheelers between January and August 2026, which is more than its entire 2025 electric two-wheeler sales of 3,15,082 units.

The TVS iQube remains one of the company’s key electric scooter products, while the company’s EV portfolio also includes models such as the TVS X and Orbiter.

Bajaj Chetak Records Strong Growth

Bajaj Auto recorded 41,019 Chetak electric scooter sales in August 2026, according to retail sales data.

The figure represented a 235 percent year-on-year increase. However, the comparison was influenced by supply-chain disruptions that affected Bajaj’s production during August 2025.

Bajaj’s January-August 2026 electric two-wheeler sales reached 3,05,226 units, already exceeding the company’s full-year 2025 total of 2,79,687 units.

Bajaj has also expanded the Chetak range with its C Series, including the C35, C30 and C25 families.

The official PM E-DRIVE database currently lists eligible Chetak variants including the Chetak 3503, Chetak C25 01 and Chetak C30 01, with their respective incentive validity periods shown on the government portal.

Ather Energy Continues to Grow

Ather Energy sold 28,708 electric two-wheelers in August 2026, recording 49 percent year-on-year growth.

The company had sold 2,29,099 electric two-wheelers during January-August 2026, an 83 percent increase compared with the same period last year. Ather held approximately 17 percent of the electric two-wheeler market during the first eight months.

The Ather Rizta continues to be an important volume model for the company, alongside the 450 range.

Ather has also expanded its portfolio with the Konarc, which launched with prices starting at ₹99,999.

The new model gives Ather another product in the growing lower-price electric scooter segment.

Vida Records 151 Percent Growth

Hero MotoCorp’s electric two-wheeler brand Vida has also recorded significant growth in 2026.

Vida sold 1,48,069 electric two-wheelers between January and August 2026, representing a 151 percent year-on-year increase. The brand held around 11 percent of India’s electric two-wheeler market during the period.

Vida’s August sales stood at 18,978 units, up 38 percent compared with August 2025.

The company’s VX2 range and its Battery-as-a-Service pricing model have been important parts of its strategy to attract electric scooter buyers.

TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Vida Cross 10 Lakh Sales

The combined performance of the four leading manufacturers is particularly significant.

Between January and August 2026, TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Vida together sold 10,38,973 electric two-wheelers.

Their combined sales increased 84 percent compared with the same period in 2025, when the four manufacturers had sold 5,65,635 units.

Together, the four brands accounted for approximately 76 percent of all electric two-wheelers sold in India during the first eight months of 2026.

Ola Electric Faces a Different Trend

Ola Electric’s performance has been different from the growth recorded by several other major manufacturers.

The company recorded 13,849 electric two-wheeler sales in August 2026, according to the latest retail sales data. This represented a 29 percent year-on-year decline.

Its January-August 2026 sales stood at 94,307 units, down 39 percent compared with the corresponding period of 2025.

Ola continues to offer multiple electric scooters and motorcycles in India, including models from its S1 and Roadster families.

PM E-DRIVE Incentive Extended for Electric Two-Wheelers

Government support continues to be an important factor in India’s electric two-wheeler market.

The official PM E-DRIVE portal confirms that the terminal date for electric two-wheelers has been extended to March 31, 2028.

The scheme is designed to support the adoption of electric vehicles equipped with advanced batteries. Both privately and commercially owned registered electric two-wheelers can be eligible, subject to the scheme’s conditions.

The current PM E-DRIVE portal states that a demand incentive of ₹2,500 per kWh applies to eligible electric two-wheelers, subject to the applicable maximum incentive and scheme conditions.

Buyers should check the official PM E-DRIVE model database before assuming that a particular electric scooter or motorcycle qualifies for the incentive.

More Electric Two-Wheelers Are Entering the Market

The growth of the electric two-wheeler segment is not limited to the four largest manufacturers.

Brands including Ola Electric, Revolt, Ultraviolette, River, Oben, Simple Energy, BGauss, Ampere, Okinawa, PURE EV, Komaki and others continue to compete across different price and performance categories.

The Indian market now includes everything from affordable electric scooters designed primarily for city commuting to high-performance electric motorcycles.

This gives buyers more options, but it also makes choosing the right model more complicated.

What Should Buyers Check Before Buying an Electric Two-Wheeler?

Before booking an electric scooter or motorcycle, buyers should look beyond the advertised ex-showroom price.

Check the final on-road price

Insurance, registration, accessories and other charges can increase the final amount payable.

Check subsidy eligibility

Do not assume that every electric two-wheeler receives a government incentive. Check the exact model and variant on the official PM E-DRIVE portal.

Compare claimed and real-world range

The manufacturer’s claimed range is useful for comparison, but actual range can vary depending on riding speed, traffic, passenger weight, road conditions and weather.

Consider your daily distance

Someone traveling 15–20 km a day may have very different requirements from someone traveling 60–100 km every day.

Check charging facilities

Home charging can make EV ownership considerably more convenient for daily users. Buyers should check their parking and electricity arrangements before purchasing.

Check the service network

The availability of authorized service centers in your city is another important consideration.

Check battery warranty

Read the battery warranty carefully and understand what is covered before making the purchase.

Electric Two-Wheeler Market Heads Towards the Festive Season

India’s electric two-wheeler market has entered the final part of 2026 with strong cumulative growth.

More than 13.6 lakh electric two-wheelers have already been sold during January-August, while TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Vida together have crossed the 10-lakh mark.

At the same time, the extension of PM E-DRIVE support for eligible electric two-wheelers provides a longer policy window for the segment.

The festive season will be an important period to watch as manufacturers compete with new launches, updated models, financing offers and wider availability.

For consumers, the growing number of electric scooters and motorcycles means there are more choices than ever, but comparing range, battery capacity, price, charging, service support and actual usage requirements remains important.

Bottom Line

India’s electric two-wheeler market continues to expand in 2026.

August 2026 sales reached 1,82,936 units, while cumulative January-August sales crossed 13.6 lakh units. TVS led the market during the period, followed by Bajaj and Ather, while Vida recorded particularly strong year-on-year growth.

The extension of PM E-DRIVE for eligible electric two-wheelers until March 31, 2028 is another important development for the industry.

As more models enter different price segments, Indian buyers now have a wider selection of electric scooters and motorcycles for city commuting, family use, long-distance riding and performance-focused riding.

ElectricStory will continue tracking the latest electric two-wheeler launches, prices, sales, subsidies and other EV developments from across India.
